CHAMPLAIN — A toddler was found wandering on a street in the Village of Champlain in the dark early today.

New York State Police received a call at 2:30 a.m. about a child being found near the intersection of Main Street and Willow Street, State Police Troop B Public Information Officer Trooper Jennifer Fleishman said.

A man driving by spotted a 3-year-old boy "in the roadway," she said.

Police tried to figure out where he had come from.

"Because he was 3, he wasn't able to tell us where he lived," Fleishman said.

Troopers knocked on doors in the neighborhood to try to find the child's family.

State Police then worked with Child Protective Services to track down the mother, who, it turned out, lives in the Village of Champlain, Fleishman said.

State Police are not identifying her, as the investigation is continuing.

The child, Fleishman said, "is in good health."

No arrests have been made, and police are continuing to work on the case with Child Protective Services.

"The motorist stopped and was concerned, and thank God he contacted us," Fleishman said.
