Brett Young Found His Love of Country Music While Annoying His Sister - Sounds Like Nashville

Oh, the unimportant fights that siblings get themselves into growing up. It’s just a part of the routine to get into petty squabbles with a brother or sister and that’s exactly what led Brett Young to his love of country music.

Young and his sister used to play the “shotgun” seat game in their family car, but with a twist. Instead of just getting to sit in the passenger side, the rider in the designated seat also got to select what music was played along the drive. Young used this as his opportunity to bug his sister while getting his dose of country music in.

“I grew up listening to country music because, really, whenever me and my sister would fight over the front seat, whoever got the front seat got to control the radio. And every time she won, I would just sit in the back frustrated that I had the back seat. But every time I won, she’d sit in the back seat and kick my chair, so at the time she didn’t like country music, and so to bug her, I’d put on country music radio and turn it really loud. The joke is on me, that’s how I found out I loved it,” he explained.

The love of country music only grew further as he traded in baseball for a music career and has become a popular new face of the genre recently. His single, “Sleep Without You,” has been released to country radio and has been climbing the charts.

Young’s self-titled debut EP, which includes “Sleep Without You,” is currently available for purchase and streaming.
