Lightening strikes three times.

It was a battle for supremacy in the 100-meter men's race on the track at Olympic Stadium in Rio de Janeiro on Sunday night.

In lane 4: Usain Bolt, the Jamaican runner who had previously won the gold in this same event in 2008 and 2012. Bolt, 29, is also the current world-record holder for this race.

In lane 6: American Justin Gatlin, who won the event in 2004. Gatlin, 34, served a 4-year suspension for doping and returned in the 2012 to take the bronze – behind Bolt and his teammate Yohan Blake.

So who won on Sunday?

As it turns out, Bolt held onto his title, finishing the race in 9.81, enough to take the gold. (He was trailing Gatlin for the first half, but he then turned on the speed to win.)

Gatin was just .08 seconds behind, and won the silver. Canadian Andre De Grasse took the bronze with a time of 9.91.

Road to Rio: How Did Team USA Train for the Olympics?

Blake finished fourth, while American Trayvon Bromell finished eighth.

The crowd was clearly in Bolt's corner, rising to their feet and chanting "Bolt! Bolt! Bolt!" as he got ready to race. When Gatlin took the track, he was booed.

Predictably, the crowd went crazy at Bolt's win. In the stands, Bolt's mother, Jennifer Bolt, waved her hands in the air and screamed. After the race, she posed for selfies with Bolt fans.

Bolt is now the first man to win three consecutive gold medals in the 100-meter race.
