Give the NFL credit: At least someone in the league offices is thinking in terms of this decade when it comes to planning the headliner for the Super Bowl halftime show.
They’re even considering — brace yourself — Adele as the entertainer for Super Bowl LI next February, according to a new report.
“There is nobody bigger in the world than Adele right now and organizers are doing absolutely everything they can to try to persuade her to sign up,” an unnamed NFL source told The Sun. “She’s sold out every date on her tour, everyone wants a piece of her and they know they can bank on her bringing in the viewers.”
She’s certainly current and she’s certainly a big, big draw, but is Adele really what the Super Bowl halftime show needs? Of course, the NFL would probably pair her with Bruno Mars or Coldplay in a “surprise” mashup of some sort, but it’s still Adele. The New York Daily News suggested that the NFL go all in on a downer show, complete with Sarah McLachlan, the Cure and maybe Andrea Bocelli, among others.
If this was just the NFL’s way of testing the reaction, it should know that it wasn’t overwhelmingly positive.

An artist like Adele can't put on an entertaining show for the Superbowl.

The other problem with Adele might be her vocabulary. Performers have been fined for cursing and making obscene gestures during halftime shows and it should be noted that Adele cursed 33 times in a Glastonbury Festival performance in June. “Do you know how rock ‘n’ roll I am? Not very, but the BBC had to give me a warning about my potty mouth before I went on.”
