The Suicide Squad soundtrack is sailing toward No. 1 on the Billboard 200 albums chart, according to industry forecasters. Those in the know suggest the set, which was released on Aug. 5 through WaterTower Music/Atlantic Records, may earn upward of 130,000 to 140,000 equivalent album units in the week ending Aug. 11.
The Billboard 200 chart ranks the most popular albums of the week based on multi-metric consumption, which includes traditional album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA) and streaming equivalent albums (SEA). The top 10 of the new Aug. 27-dated Billboard 200 chart -- where Suicide Squad may launch at No. 1 -- is scheduled to be revealed on Billboard’s websites on Sunday, Aug. 14.

The bulk of Suicide Squad’s first-week unit total will likely be driven by traditional album sales, as it could sell between 110,000 and 120,000. The rest of its overall total will be powered by SEA and TEA, courtesy of new tracks on the album like Twenty One Pilots’ “Heathens” and the all-star “Sucker for Pain” by Lil Wayne, Wiz Khalifa and Imagine Dragons with Logic, Ty Dolla $ign and X Ambassadors.
If Suicide Squad bows atop the Billboard 200, it will mark the first chart-topping soundtrack in a year, since Disney Channel’s Descendants opened at No. 1 on the Aug. 22, 2015-dated list. The last theatrical film soundtrack to hit No. 1 was Pitch Perfect 2, which debuted in the top slot on the May 30, 2015, chart.
Elsewhere in the new Billboard 200’s top 10, watch for Skillet’s Unleashed, the Now 59 compilation and indie country singer Cody Johnson’s Gotta Be Me. Skillet could slide in with 60,000 units, while Now 59 might bow with 40,000 to 45,000. Johnson’s latest could launch with 25,000 to 30,000.
