Comcast ready to build Fort Collins call center - The Coloradoan

Work to convert part of the HP campus in southeast Fort Collins into a $7.5 million call center for Comcast Cable Corp. is nearly ready to begin.

The company applied last week for a building permit to begin extensive renovations on 18,000 square feet on the first floor and 73,000 square feet on the second floor of HP's campus, 3420 E. Harmony Road, building 5. The permit lists the value of the project at $7.4 million.

In addition to HP, spinoff Hewlett Packard Enterprise and Broadcom — formerly Avago —  the campus is home to Madwire Media, which moved in earlier this year as HP began leasing vacant space.

Comcast, a cable and internet service provider, announced in May plans to open a call center in Fort Collins and hire more than 600 workers to staff the facility.

Hiring is expected to begin later this year with a projected opening in early 2017, said Leslie Oliver, external communications director for Comcast's Mountain West region.

The addition of 600 jobs to the 50 Comcast already employs in Fort Collins will make it one of the city's largest private employers.

The Colorado Office of Economic Development and International Trade tapped into the Colorado Job Growth Incentive Tax Credits program to offer Comcast $8.1 million in incentives to expand in the state.

Before Comcast can receive any reduction to its corporate income tax, it must create and maintain for at least one full year 635 full-time jobs that pay the average wage in Larimer County, or at least $44,421, according to the state office. The tax credits will be available over eight years as long as Comcast meets the job and wage requirements.

If Comcast creates 600 jobs rather than 635, the incentive will be prorated. If it falls below the wage requirement, Comcast will not be eligible for tax credits until it increases worker pay.

Those 600 jobs will help create another 2,400 jobs through a four-to-one multiplier effect, according to the Governor's Office of Information Technology. For every technology job, four additional jobs are created including more lawyers, doctors, restaurant workers, dry cleaners and others who help provide community services, the office states.

Comcast employs 8,000 workers Colorado. The majority of the Fort Collins jobs will be new positions. Comcast has a cable franchise agreement with the city of Fort Collins, which is studying the feasibility of establishing its own high-speed internet service.
