Introduced by longtime friend and avid supporter Mark Haines, US Senator Rand Paul visited Glasgow on Tuesday morning.
Speaking of liberty and what he feels were the intentions of the founding fathers, Senator Paul said the difference in a republic and a democracy is a republic is bound by the constitution and the government can’t be everything to everyone. He pointed to the 9th amendment that says the rights not listed should not be disparaged as one of the most important. The constitution, he says, is not to restrain the people, but the government. He said that when the tea party movement first began, he would get asked what it was all about:
He pointed to the $100billion spent in Afghanistan on bridges and roads, when ours are not in good shape. $45 million was spent on a natural gas gas station. $8billion to eradicate poppies. Paul also pointed to an amendment he introduced that said the US shouldn’t send any assistance to countries that persecute Christians.
When Senator Paul opened up the floor for questions, the majority of the questions centered around the new rate structure at the Glasgow Electric Plantboard. Bud Simmons, who leads Senior Citizens Against Rising Expenses, or SCARE, asked Senator Paul directly for help:
Senator Paul encouraged those unhappy with the new rates, to go to the city council, find out who appoints the board of directors and to make sure their voices are heard. Senator Paul also thanked everyone for their continued support.
