Dramatic rescue of NC mom, baby trapped in flood caught on tape - CBS News

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - A mother and her baby were captured on video in a dramatic rescue from Hurricane Matthew’s floodwaters in Fayetteville, North Carolina. 

The rescue was caught on video by Fayetteville Police and had more than 1.4 million views on Facebook, CBS affiliate WNCN reports.

Police were driving around in a special military vehicle that is able to drive through high waters when they discovered the woman — who also had a baby with her.

The mom told police that the driver left her along with the baby in the flooded car.  On the video, the police vehicle backs up to the car and the baby is plucked from the woman’s arms.

The woman was then able to climb into the truck.

In Fayetteville overall, emergency first-responders confirm four people are unaccounted for in the city due to high water.

North Carolina Gov. Pat McCrory said there were eight fatalities in the state and authorities are searching for five people, according to the Associated Press.  

McCrory said Sunday afternoon that dangerous flooding will last into next week.

Thousands of people had to be rescued from homes and businesses when Hurricane Matthew’s torrential rains triggered severe flooding in North Carolina. Some were plucked from rooftops, others were clinging to trees and one woman and her small child were standing on their car as the rising waters swallowed it. 

The death toll in the U.S. climbed to at least 17 - nearly half of them in North Carolina. More than 500 were killed by the storm in Haiti.
