Old Dominion's latest single "Song for Another Time" plays like an iPod on shuffle, ping-ponging through references to some of music's most famous hits. And while allusions to "Sunday Morning Coming Down" and "Always on My Mind" are front and center, the fact that it's not solely country songs represents the scope of the CMA Award-nominated band.
Van Morrison's "Brown Eyed Girl," Tom Petty's "Free Fallin'," the Righteous Brothers' "You've Lost that Lovin' Feelin'" and even Lionel Richie's "Dancing on the Ceiling" all flesh out the lyrics to "Song for Another Time," which is nearing the Top 10 of Billboard's Country Airplay chart.
"I feel like we got real lucky with that song, as far as the writing of it. It's kind of a puzzle to fit all those references together … but it naturally happened," says singer Matt Ramsey. "We landed on the idea of telling a story through song titles. It was fun to go through songs that evoke certain emotions that fit into this story."
Ramsey says the band knew they had something special when they ran through the song before a stop on their tour with Kenny Chesney, prior to finalizing their debut record Meat and Candy.
"We were at soundcheck on the Chesney tour and played 'Song for Another Time' in a stadium and it felt so big and huge," says Ramsey. "We said it has to go on the album."
Recently, Rolling Stone Country tagged along with the members of Old Dominion – Ramsey, guitarist Trevor Rosen, guitarist Brad Tursi, bassist Geoff Sprung and drummer Whit Sellers – on a tour of the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum in Nashville to talk about the way that music, country and otherwise, has played a key role in their lives.
