Pink flowed through the streets of Richmond Friday, as Madison County residents and businesses kicked off October as Breast Cancer Awareness Month with the Paint the Town Pink Campaign (PTTP), hosted by Baptist Health Richmond.
Community members bustled into Soft Shoe Inc. at 7 a.m. Friday morning for Pink Friday. The morning event marked the first day customers could purchase PTTP apparel, and were treated to coffee, donuts, and tons of prizes.
Merchandise included t-shirts for $12, raglan baseball t-shirts for $22, and long sleeved t-shirts for $16. All shirts were printed by Surge, with 100 percent of proceeds going back into the campaign. PTTP apparel is also on sale at Merle Norman.
Today, adventurers will head downtown for a scavenger hunt at 11 a.m. Participants will gather at the Madison County courthouse lawn. Then, they will be sent to downtown locations to complete various fun, informative, and humorous tasks. Scavenger stops include Purdy’s Coffee Co., Café Meeples, Adorabelles, and The Paddy Wagon. A prize will be awarded.
“It’s a different, fun, and educational way to partner with downtown businesses,” said Megan Tracy, marketing and public relations coordinator at Baptist Health Richmond.
At noon, a courthouse lawn ceremony will conclude the day’s events. Tracy, Adam Griggs from Soft Shoe Inc, and a breast cancer survivor will speak.
Attending breast cancer survivors will be recognized with a pink rose. Following, Tracy said a balloon release would celebrate the present survivors and honor those lost.
Tracy said the goal is for PTTP to begin every Oct. 1 to be consistent and meaningful.
“I hope the participants take away the importance of early detection,” she said. “And how important it is to get mammograms, and recognize the signs and symptoms.”
This year’s event garnered around 40 community sponsors, said Tracy.
PTTP was created approximately eight years ago to raise cancer awareness in Madison County, according to Tracy. The campaign is native to the county. Funds also stay local.
In the past, Tracy said, monies have been given to charities such as The Brighter Days Ahead Foundation and the Madison County Breast Cancer Support Group.
This year brought a change to the campaign in the form of mini grants. Tracy said $10,000 would be available, with approved applicants receiving up to $3,000 each. Paint the Town Pink will begin accepting applications for the grants on Saturday, Oct. 1. For more information contact Tracy at (859) 625-3156.
It is not too late to participate in the PTTP door contest, judged by the Business Babes Society of Madison County. Contenders should decorate their door/window in a pink theme, then email a photo to megan.tracy2@bhsi.com by Oct. 5. For more information visit the Paint the Town Pink Richmond, KY Facebook page.
