If you want to avoid baby-naming regret, think like a posh Brit - Quartz

[ad_2]

Anyone who has had a baby, is having a baby, or has thought about having a baby, knows that coming up with a name is a supremely fraught process.

You and your partner need to agree. There are families to appease. A name is meant to capture a personality, but no parent has a clue what the kid’s personality will be. Cultural trends play a role (hello, Elsa), but a kid’s name is also meant to stand the test of time (bad luck, Khaleesi).

A recent poll of parents suggests that nagging doubts about their kids’ names linger for a long time. Mumsnet, a popular British parenting site, polled 1,000 parents and found almost one in five (18%) regretted the name they picked for their child, with the main reason being that it turned out to be too common.

And no one likes to be common.

The Brits may have a solution to this: give your kid a whole bunch of names. According to Anglophenia, there is a long list of posh Brits with a laundry list of names: there’s Hugh John Mungo Grant and Rosamund Mary Ellen Pike, as well as Benedict Timothy Carlton Cumberbatch and James Hugh Calum Laurie (Hugh Laurie). The more given names, the more chances one will work out.

The tradition might be related to Brits’ enduring love of all things royal: Queen Elizabeth II is Elizabeth Alexandra Mary; Prince Charles is Charles Philip Arthur George; Prince William is William Arthur Philip Louis. There are of course examples in the US, too, like George Herbert Walker Bush.

To avoid the dreaded common name, there is also the long-established shift toward “original” names, in part thanks to the fact that a lot of celebrities have gone down this path with gusto: there’s Apple Martin, daughter of Gwyneth Paltrow and Chris Martin; Sunday Rose Kidman Urban, daughter of Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban; and Apollo Bowie Flynn, son of Gwen Stefani and Gavin Rossdale, to name a few.

Jean Twenge, co-author of The Narcissism Epidemic: Living in the Age of Entitlement and a professor at San Diego State University, attributes the shift away from common names to a rise in narcissism. She looked at 325 million babies born in the US between 1800 and 2007 and found that in the 1800s 40% of boys were given one of the 10 most common names, compared with fewer than 10% today. For girls, getting a top-10 name dropped from 25% in 1945 to 8% today.

The same can be seen in Britain. According to Gregory Clark, author of The Son Also Rises: Surnames and the History of Social Mobility, before 1800 half of all English men shared one of four first names; by 2012, the top four names—Harry, Oliver, Jack, and Charlie—accounted for just 7% of English baby boys.

“There’s been this cultural shift toward focusing on the individual, toward standing out and being unique as opposed to fitting in with the group and following the rules,” Twenge told LiveScience. “I think it is an indication of our culture becoming more narcissistic.”

But how many parents will eventually regret it?

Where to get the best food at Bumbershoot - The Seattle Times

[ad_2]

It almost makes too much sense: Along with the usual festival fare, some great Seattle restaurants are finally on the bill at Bumbershoot this weekend. To go with your Fetty Wap on Friday, for instance, you can get Little Uncle‘s phad grapao moo sap (minced pork sautéed with garlic, chilies and hot basil, served with rice and topped with an organic fried egg), Bok A Bok‘s Korean fried chicken wings (served with ginger slaw, biscuits and soy/sesame dipping sauce), shrimp ceviche tostadas from Gracia, beet and stone fruit salad from Matt’s in the Market, Radiator Whiskey’s currywurst, and Dungeness crab/shrimp cocktail from Pike Place Fish Market, a.k.a. the fish-throwers.

If you heard that hotly anticipated West Seattle spot New Luck Toy would be on site, that was part of the original plan, but they’re too busy trying to open the actual restaurant. More elaborate sit-down dinners have also fallen by the wayside. Still, Little Uncle at Bumbershoot!

Offerings at the B-EATS tent, located just north of the end of the Monorail and near the entrance to the Center Theater, vary by day — see the full list below to plan your Bumbershoot eating schedule. And as far as drinks go, conveniently, there’s a beer garden adjacent.

Inside the Hip-Hop Soundtrack of Marvel's 'Luke Cage' - BET (blog)

[ad_2]

Fans of both the comic book world and hip-hop music are in for a treat, as Netflix’s upcoming series Luke Cage is a wonderful marriage between the two.

However, the series wouldn’t have become what it has without the help of a serious soundtrack, as put together by some of the genre’s most reputed names.

As reported, the score has been handled by A Tribe Called Quest's Ali Shaheed Muhammad and Adrian Younge. On top of that, there is an incredible amount of featured artists, and not to mention each episode has been titled after a Gang Starr song.

Today (August 31), Netflix has set free the first featurette, which discloses some more information on how the series came to be enhanced by the music and how each episode was approached like making an album.

The featurette includes the likes of A$AP Ferg and Method Man, who both have shared their love for comics throughout several interviews over the years.

The series makes it official debut on Netflix, with all episodes dropping at once, on September 30.

Check out the featurette and the accompanying trailer in the clips below.

Great Falls native invites pop star Adele to his Montana wedding - KRTV Great Falls News

[ad_2]

GREAT FALLS -

Vince Rossi says he and his fiancé, Great Falls native Ryan Salonen, were ecstatic about seeing Adele perform during her 'Adele Live 2016' tour at the Los Angeles Staples Center recently.

Salonen starred in Great Falls High School productions including ‘Seussical the Musical’ and ‘Romeo & Juliet’ before moving to California.

He has since made several television appearances on shows like "Glee," "The Young & The Restless," and "Pretty Little Liars."

Actor and musician Vince Rossi has made several appearances in short films and television including College Humor Originals and Buttons. Rossi is also working to promote his band ‘Winslet,' a pop-duo based in Los Angeles.

While both Salonen and Rossi are fans of the British pop super-star, Salonen says he has always held special admiration for Adele; the couple also saw her perform last February.

“When she was promoting her album '25' last fall, she was doing countless interviews and I watched every interview at least once if not a couple of times, because I was just - she is just so engaging as a person and even though I don’t know her personally she seemingly is very, very down to earth, very genuine,” said Salonen.

"It was crazy, I was telling our neighbors, ‘I’m just so excited to go and watch Ryan watch Adele because I just know how much he adores her and I was like, ‘This is going to be so fun because I know, everything she says he’s gonna be like (in) taking in,” said Rossi.

Rossi says he dreamed of asking Adele to their wedding on stage the night before the concert, but never expected that it would become reality less than 24 hours later.

During Adele's performance, the singer noticed Rossi and Salonen in the 16th row, telling the audience that the two were dancing like no one was watching.

She then called the two up on stage, where Rossi says his dream came true.

Rossi: “(To Adele) This is so weird ‘cause I had a dream this would happen I’m not kidding! I’m not kidding I really did. And I said (to Ryan) if we see Adele and we go up there, I want her to come to the wedding as a guest.

Adele: “Well, I might be - my tour should be over by then so, yeah so I’ll come.”

The couple says they had chosen the wedding venue in Montana just weeks before their fateful encounter in LA. This would be Adele's first visit to Montana.

Adele: "Where is it?'

Salonen: “Do you where, do you know where like Washington is?'

Adele: 'Oh yeah'

Salonen: 'So it's just next door!'

Adele: 'Oh there you go!'

"This is like such a life moment, and we asked Adele to come to our wedding and she said yes! And I mean, if she does, amazing, if she doesn't, she's a busy woman, clearly,” said Rossi and Salonen in a reaction video they posted after the concert.

While both Salonen and Rossi say they would love to have Adele present when they tie the knot, the couple says the experience with the singer along with her kind and genuine nature is already enough to be thankful for.

Regardless of the outcome next summer, the couple hopes to send her a thank-you note expressing their gratitude.

Both say they are still keeping their fingers crossed and will continue adoring Adele as they await the big day.

“Regardless of us up being on stage, the whole concert - it was so personal and like, you felt like out of 20,000 people you felt like it was you and her. She just makes it very personal and y’know, somehow very intimate in that huge arena,” said Salonen.

The couple plans to wed at an undisclosed location next summer in Montana.

Rossi's video from the concert has been viewed more than 205,000 times:

YouTube sparks confusion with “not advertiser-friendly” flags - PC Invasion (blog)

[ad_2]

youtube

There’s much astir in the world of YouTube with either new or newly-worded (it’s not quite clear yet) guidelines over the contents of videos. Popular YouTube characters (both in and outside of videogames) have been hit with flags that their video(s) are no longer receiving ad revenue because they contain “content that might not be appropriate for advertising”.

Everyone can probably think of a YouTube channel or two that mainstream advertisers wouldn’t want to be associated with, but the Google-owned company seem to be approaching the issue with a rather broad brush. The new and/or updated guidelines on being “advertiser friendly” (you can see the full list in an image below) include things like avoiding “vulgar language” and “controversial subjects … including subjects relating to war, political conflicts [and] natural disasters”.

How that might impact YouTube video creators will come down to the amount of nuance applied when the company (or its automated algorithms) enforce the rules. They don’t have a terrific track record in that regard (automated copyright strikes, etc), so people are understandably expressing concern, waiting to see what happens, or defaulting to internet freak-out mode.

Information obtained by Arin “egoraptor” Hanson of GameGrumps fame suggests this may not be heralding an immediate YouTube apocalypse for those who enjoy the use of naughty swears. In a series of tweets, he relays details he’s been given by YouTube themselves.

“Policy isn’t changed, it is just now less vaguely worded so when a video does get flagged, the reasoning is clearer for the video creator,” he writes. “I guess “advertiser friendly” related flags weren’t as clearly explained (or at all) when videos were flagged. Now they are.”

“So basically, videos were already being flagged for this reason for a long time, but it wasn’t clear what the flag was for when it happened.”

That doesn’t necessarily explain the apparent increase in videos being flagged for not being “advertiser friendly”, but it does help to clarify YouTube’s position on the matter. What’s much less clear is why YouTube is choosing to send policy clarification on an individual basis, rather than making a general statement to alleviate (or possibly increase, depending what they say) user concerns.
